Book review

After complications and a difficult birth, Herbert Hartley's mother died on the day he came into the world. His father Fred, unemployed had no way of bringing up three boys and a newborn baby on his own and so Herbert and his three brothers were placed into an orphanage. At the age of fourteen Herbert moved to a halfway house in Manchester the North of England. The landlady, a Russian Jewish Gypsy terrified him with her supernatural powers, teacup readings, visions and changes to her appearance. Life began for Herbert when he started his first job as a dishwasher in a large hotel in the city. Years later he moved to Scotland to work at one of the most famous hotels in the world and it was there he rose to the top in his profession as a Chef.
